My professional career has been in countryside management, rural policy and conservation.  I worked for the RSPB, Wildlife Trusts, Natural England’s predecessors, Defra and, for the last 11 years, the National Parks where I was Chief Executive of the Peak District, led the UK National Parks for 4 years and led the Communications programme for 8 years.

I trained as a biologist, have had a life-long interest in natural history and landscapes and have worked on some of the most significant conservation issues over the last 30 years, such as landscape-scale conservation, species protection and recovery, the future of farming, minerals, water and transport and engaging the public, especially young people in nature.

I led major campaigns with the RSPB, National Parks and Visit Britain.  I broadcast regularly on BBC local radio and TV and am popular with news journalists working in my area.

I have developed a written style that meets the exacting needs of The Times and several Archant Life titles and have contributed over 100 newspaper and magazine columns - on time and to specified word counts over the last 3 years.  I want to tell the stories of the countryside and I have something to say.

I am diversifying my career and actively seeking a portfolio of national activities, including as a Trustee on the Heritage Lottery Fund, working with corporates and as a trustee of national environmental bodies.   I offer my expertise, passion and contacts to editors and broadcasters.

“Jim has delivered consistently excellent 600 word columns for The Derbyshire Magazine for over 3 years as one of our main columnists.  He always covers interesting topics with an elegant turn of phrase and I am not at all surprised that The Times has asked him to write for them.  He has always met our deadlines and word limits and has been a great asset to our magazine”.
